Anzac Day – April 25 – is a significant day for Australians and New Zealanders. For those who would like to know more about Anzac Day here are some official links:
The Australian War Memorial (AWM) in co-operation with the Returned Services League (RSL) hosts the Dawn Service in Canberra and the National ANZAC Day Ceremony. The Anzac Day tradition is explained at the AWM site.
Dawn services are held around Australia on April 25, at Gallipoli itself and in New Zealand. Anzac Day has special significance for the Australian Defence Force .
As a gift to the nation, the National Archives of Australia has made available, on line, World War I service records. This mammoth task took three years. As an Australian with ancestors whose records are part of this collection, I can only express my gratitude at being able to see such records.
The Australian Governor-General, himself a former member of the Australian Defence Force who has served with distinction, made the following speech at the Anzac Day Dawn Service at Anzac Cove in Turkey on 25 April 2006 Here is a link to the Governor-General’s speech on 25 April 2007
In recent years, participation in Dawn Services and in other Anzac Day commemorations has been steadily growing.
From a personal perspective, Anzac Day has great significance for me as well.
